For numerous political, social and economic reasons, the regions of southern Italy, and specifically the villages in central Calabria, have struggled from a tremendous loss of population. Italy has been affected by emigration for centuries. The two major diasporas in Italian history resulted in a loss of up to an estimated 14 million people. Just under half were from the south. In addition, an internal migration from the rural south to the more industrialized north started in the 1950s and continues to the present day.
This place, these people, these traditions are too beautiful and rich to lose. To those that have left and to the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren of those millions of immigrants, we want to welcome you home. Even if you don't have one drop of italian blood, somewhere in your life you have been affected by the Italian Diaspora. You have been hugged by an italian grandmother, eaten sausage and peppers at a feast or sang "Volare" or "That's Amore!" You are family. You, too, can come home. Calabria, San Pietro Apostolo, welcomes you home.
We want to help people discover or rediscover this land, its people and its deep, rich traditions and culture. We encourage experiential, immersive vacations where you can live and feel and learn and truly become a part of this amazing place. By doing this, jobs can be created, families can stay together. Stores can open, businesses can thrive and the rich traditions and culture will live on.
Our dream is to preserve the authenticity of the region, specifically our little town of San Pietro Apostolo. Warning!! There will be NO plastic bobble-heads of Saint Peter! We want San Pietro Apostolo to be the hub of experiential, immersive tourism for central Calabria.
